The Red class (8-11 years’ old) continued exploring the properties of water with the travelling water experiment.
The experiment began with the question: Can you pour water from one glass into another? Of course you can!
But can you do it when the glasses are 60 centimetres apart?
This led to predictions and plenty of curiosity.
Students discovered that when water molecules stick to each other, it is called cohesion, and when they stick to another surface, like the wet string, it is called adhesion. These forces, along with gravity, allowed the water to travel along the string and reach the second cup instead of falling straight down.
This is an easy and fun experiment to try at home, though be prepared for a few spills until the right angle is found!
We also revisited the scientific method, reinforcing the steps:
Ask a question
Form a hypothesis
Perform a test
Record your results.
